Construction began in 1973, when Toronto’s growing skyline was creating problems for television and radio signals. More than 1,500 workers spent about 40 months building the tower, which officially opened to the public on June 26, 1976. Standing at 553.33 metres (1,815 feet), it became the world’s tallest freestanding structure, a title it held for more than three decades.

🚁 The antenna was installed by helicopter. In 1975, a giant Sikorsky helicopter named Olga lifted the CN Tower’s 39 antenna sections into place, one piece at a time.

⚡ The CN Tower is struck by lightning around 75 times a year. Its incredible height makes it a natural target during thunderstorms.
